in this booklet theres an interview with Kubo (the creator) and she said that Victor realized he never really got to spend that much time with Makkachin and its 10+ years old and Victor wanted to make sure they could spend their last few years close
me crying at the thought that Victor also took a break from skating because he knows that Makkachin is old and their time together could end at any time so Victor wanted to spend more time with them and then he got that and love along the way ;u;
